Silent Echo of Repetition and Symmetry

In a blank screen, some trees and fences are orderly drawn. No, looking closely at the symmetrically opened blank page, it is not drawn. It is only stamped on, which means it is duplicated. And its symmetrical composition is only the marks of left and right with the center as a partition. The white page also is not painted as white but it is just a white paper itself. The dwindling composition which edges’ are cut by the paper gives a vague depth to the page and implies the endless repetition of the image. It is obvious that Sunghee Pae uses the material characteristic of the printing in a very clever and appropriate way however, is it her digital generation’s sentiment? Her detailed working style reminds the duplication and repetition module in the digital working space.

The repeated object on the white page has already a characteristic of a unit. This gives the impression that the artist uses the unit as a stamp, which is the equivalent of the computer graphic works—expanded units of pixels composed. This aspect is clearly visible in Sunghee pae’s recent work which is rooted in the printing technique but spreading through the physical space.

The street lights, the trees and the fences are made as individual, like the white chess pieces. The audience can lay the white paper—that was only a screen— and change the locations as one want like playing a game. It is the reenactment and the expansion of the artist printing. The object that was pressed on a screen like a stamp became the individual object of that shape and got out of the screen. If the printing is a computer image with a 2D form, Sunghee Pae’s sculpture can be 3D embodiment of the print work and an annotation of it. One of the characteristics of the final product is that despite all the fact, it shows the poetic repetition and harmony. The white backdrop is silent and the image of repeated trees and fences evokes a rhythm. This rhythm being created as three-dimension, it becomes changeable. This snowy winter, Sunghee Pae’s exhibition to admire and recite a poem with no decorative words on a winter’s white blank paper is highly anticipated.
