Portraying Dominant Order through Aerial Viewpoint

Pae staged one of the studios at Goyang Art Studio into reduction models of large-scale apartment complex. However, they weren’t exquisite models in comparison to the awfully splendid simulations that construct today’s spectacle; they were like aerial maps that divide and roughly position buildings and empty spaces. In Urban Park, Pae lined up white boxes to represent apartment buildings, and a green line that signified a green belt. With variable structure that can be folded and spread out, the grid can probably expand infinitely in space. Standing in front of a sight that takes in the whole view, both the viewer and the artist become a creator with the power to arrange and change the things in the scenery. Seemingly simple yet inclusive of everything, they are compressed versions of city landscape in which large scale design is applied en bloc through developments due to public policy or capital. Large-scale apartment complex is a reduction model of a city, and the city is similar to an apartment complex. They structurally reconstruct a way of life in the sense that such space demands one to live a certain way.

Desires produced in partitioned private spaces are consumed through a definite form such as safety and convenience, and the white boxes are easily erected and taken down. A printmaking major, Pae emphasizes the process of reproduction of the same subject (product). The energy that can drive the formation and destruction of city can appear as being progressive or violent. While this is a utopic form of modernity which is the similar structure that can be seen anywhere in the world, the extreme city landscape in Korea exceeds such utopianism of modernity. The elements that form such utopic city landscape come from the aerial maps printed on advertising brochures of apartments that include a model house. In places where nature has been destroyed en mass, similar type of nature is transplanted. As such, scanty saplings that occupy streets and parks surrounding apartment buildings also become the main element of the landscape. There are no human figures in Pae’s city landscapes. While they might have been omitted because the purpose of Pae’s work is to reconstruct a certain sight as it is, the absence of human form suggests the fact that structure and human beings have always been incompatible from the very beginning.

While humans make the structure, and in turn, are shaped through such structure, structures appear in Pae’s work without their context. The scenery of nature on the wall is rendered in pointillism which, in contrast to the straight manmade structures, evokes the sense of fleeting presence. Trees have no sense of wild self-sustained energy; they are transplanted from somewhere and replanted elsewhere, like how the empty boxes — signifying apartment buildings — can be placed here and there like Lego blocks. Similarly, trees are only just symbolized through a green belt when they are placed along with man-made structures. Pae portrays the trees as a tamed nature that cannot trespass beyond the compartmentalized place; they are completely subjugated under structure. Geometric, straight and in good order, they are similar to the French or Italian classical garden. The aerial view — which is the source of Pae’s work — offers a sight of the whole including neighboring areas, and suggests possession and domination like in the classical perspective or theaters and gardens that are modeled according to it. Thus the aerial view of the artist’s packaged model houses suggests the power of choice in the almighty consumer standing in front of a display of goods at the department store.

The aerial view which represents or reconstructs space according to perspective is commonly seen in art. A major stage setting of our life, the large complex of apartment buildings is a part of the history of representation. Anne Surgers states in the book Scenographies du theatre occidental, that assuming that the subject of portrayal is an ideal reality, a theater is a place where one can see a representation of the king-centered world that’s been ideally organized according to the king. If the subject of portrayal is reality, the theater shows a world of representation that tries to represent reality as closely as possible. This is the order of vision that penetrates Classicism and Realism following Renaissance. The fundamental mechanisms of Italian Theater are still activated in today’s theaters, particularly in today’s films, photography, TV and virtual space. The architectural theoreticians of Renaissance did not differentiate the term ‘stage artist’ with ‘perspective artist’. Allowing one the visibility of everything in one view, perspective law allocated a certain place in which one can completely possess a certain place. According to such perspective, everything from buildings to nature is arranged through the perspective of possession and consumption.

The brick-like lumps imprinted in bulk in Pae's work is a unit for quantification of space, which is a familiar measure in the perspective principle. The white buildings of equal size symbolize not something qualitative but quantitative, and every aspect of daily life in it also becomes a code that's precisely anticipated and measured. The homogeneous quantitative space is an abstract space rather that a concrete place in life, and this relates to the idea that principle of perspective — which is the origin of aerial map — is ideal rather than real. Artificially compartmentalized and composed spaces tend to symbolize the outside world in general. This also goes for nature patterned with trees of similar form and size as if they were purchased in bulk from a farm. They don't seem qualitatively different from the white blocks that symbolize artificial structures. They reflect the classical thought which saw nature and reason as being fundamentally equal, and the modern reason today has been reduced into the realm of calculation applied to control gain and loss.

The green areas geometrically arranged according to aerial maps in Urban Park are as artificial as the French garden in the days of Louis XIV. Such gardens regard nature as a balanced and controlled art work, and symbolize nature as a subject of domination. The range of nature, or landscape, is determined through the central view point, and the price of product changes according to the landscape. The composition of garden that's geometrically balanced is a classical attitude towards nature, or a pursuit of balance and rigid unification. The harmony between art and nature set this way projects the expression of human domination over nature, and the vision which hopes for nature tamed by man. Utopia itself illustrated geometrically is a product of subjugation. As classical painters including Poussin portrayed utopic landscapes in which natural and artificial are arranged in strict and calculative way as to harmonize in whole, the magnificent scenery suggested by today's aerial view express harmony, balance, peace, eternity, and an ideal world alienated from reality. The perfect order suggested in the artificial landscape reflects the process of taming nature and environment, into 'perfect' order to be consumed.

The white blocks and green lines are two elements that form the abstract landscape. These abstract elements visualize system of representation in the clearest way. Power is what activates the system of representation, and it's already immanent in the principle of perspective. According to Scenographies du theatre occidental, the stage constructed according to perspective law is built on the premise of the powerful symbolic authority of the king, who enabled the performance on the stage. The establishment of perspective that surveys the whole differs according to authority. The vision changes according to the viewing location, and this is a symbolic order which goes beyond the mere visual order. Symbolic order allows one to measure what cannot be measured, consume what cannot be consumed, and enforces order of domination. The uniform white blocks, and nature subjugated under geometry implicate the powerful logic of sameness which regulated the classical perspective principle. There is no room for heterogeneous others to intervene in such world reduced to 'essence'. Subjugated order is not only forcefully activated by external measures; the violence — which homogenizes everything and turns difference into discrimination — is inherent in the mechanism of internal will and desire. The order of representation ingrained in the human mind is reflected in turn in the physical world.
